Penelope Jo Matchett is an Australian photographic artist, focussed on the surreal. She creates ethereal photographic artworks using light painting techniques, creative use of studio flash and compositing. Penelope draws from her personal experiences for inspiration and in turn, she uses her art as a therapy and a means to finding beauty amongst the darkness.
With 20 years of experience accompanied by study of photography, Penelope has also been involved in various exhibitions in the Central West NSW; including a solo exhibition at Jayes Gallery, Molong. She has had works on display at exhibitions in Sydney, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Miami and New York, including a Times Square billboard.
She also runs her small business ‘Penelope Jo Photography’.
In 2024, Penelope collaborated as a contributing author in 'Daring Brilliance: Artists Rising in the World of Web3 & Beyond'. In 2025 she was a featured artist in the Bronx magazine BleuCalf.
Striving to share the wonders of light painting, and expressing her passion for photographic art with others, Penelope creates moments that hold light and dark - demonstrating the roles these elements play in the creation of mood and atmosphere. With the use of light painting tools and techniques, she manipulates light and the way it’s presence and absence can turn an ordinary scene into an enchanting one; evoking wonder and emotion.
